Super 8 (2011)

The main plot is not about a rampaging alien on a small city. Super 8 is a tribute to the movie director himself, J.J. Abrams. It’s his personal work. The “Super 8” title is a direct referring to a film type made by Kodak that were commonly used by amateur filmmaker in the ‘70s and obviously, the young Abrams lived in that era.

It didn’t take by surprise as a young boy, Abrams was very enthusiast about film making. Hey, what was the plot of Super 8? Simple. A group of teenage kids tried to create a movie to be participated at some amateur movie festival.  On the process, they encountered with a dramatic event that turned their path of life.

The child-father issue also plays important role here. Hmmmm…. I wonder, is it another personal issue for J.J. Abrams? I’d like to highlight Elle Fanning’s performance. She has an impressive ability to change her face expression one to another in a blink of the eyes.

So we got alien, action (the train accident scene was awesome), romance, and family drama. Is it good movie? Yes, it’s a good one, but not that great. Watch it if you like The Goonies, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and Stand by Me.

Some Trivias:

  1. Super 8 produced by Steven Spielberg .  I think it’s no coincidence Super 8 had the elements of  Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
  2. Movie scoring by long time Abrams’ collaborator, Michael Giacchino, who won 2010 Academy Award for Pixar’s Up.
  3. A full movie created by the kids, titled “The Case”,  is shown during the end credits.
